Happy Birthday, Abraham Lincoln! The Question of the Day was: Can you tell Ms. Kaim three facts about Abraham Lincoln? We started out with a majority of students responding no to the the question. By the end of the day, most students chose to move their magnets to yes. So...ask your child to tell you three facts about Abraham Lincoln!
Morning Work was a continuation of yesterday's lesson about the geography of Africa. Students completed the Map Champs Atlas activity sheet about the continent. After this, we moved on to the first class session focusing on our 16th president. We read and discussed the Scholastic News article "Lincoln's Beard." This included watching a brief biography of Lincoln's life, playing a comprehension game about the article, and answering questions about his life. We also read the book Abraham Lincoln: The Boy Who Loved Books.
The math lesson of the day gave students practice in writing equations (number sentences) to represent and solve various addition and subtraction situations. Students were tasked with identifying the missing number in each equation.
Specials classes of the day were ASL and STEAM. Ask your child about the animal adventures in the STEAM lab! When the first graders returned to class, they watched a brief video clip of volcanoes erupting. They also helped measure ingredients and then watched a model of a volcano erupt. Of course, we know real volcanoes do not erupt by adding vinegar to baking soda!
The day ended with a second session about Abraham Lincoln. Students received a "newspaper" to take home with more details about Lincoln's life. They enjoyed the book Abe Lincoln's Hat before standing in front of a life-size poster of Lincoln in order to compare their heights to his. The boys and girls also compared the size of their shoes to Lincoln's shoes.
The first graders will have financial literacy with Ms. Weindruch tomorrow!
Parents, thank you for sending in boxes and egg cartons for us to use in class. We will put them to good use!
