The big event of the day was our field trip to the Chicago Botanic Garden. It was our first field trip of the year and the class did a wonderful job following bus rules on the ride there. We began our garden visit in the learning center. The boys and girls participated in the "Surprising Seeds" workshop. They took part in hands-on investigations of a variety of seeds. They discussed whether they thought the different seeds traveled by wind, animal, water, or drop-rot methods. They sorted seeds and then tested them to see which method worked. Testing whether the seeds floated was a favorite activity. The workshop concluded with a nasturtium seed planting session. Ask your child about what he/she discovered about seeds!
After lunch, the first graders explored the garden in their small groups. I know the class was excited, but this part of the trip proved difficult for quite a few of my little friends. Let's work on following directions given by adults and exhibiting self control. Please ask your child whether there were any times when he/she could have made better choices today. Ending the trip on a positive note, the sleeping contest on the bus ride back to school was a success for both parents and students! :) As long as your eyes are closed and voice is off, you are a winner. Bonus points to you if you really do fall asleep!
Other activities at school today included art with Ms. Pearlmutter, the spelling test (super bonus word: platform), and Student of the Week Sharing. We learned that Gavin would like to be a basketball player, his favorite subject is math, and he has been to Medieval Times!
Have a wonderful weekend!
