As you can see from the photo above, we had outdoor recess again today! The boys and girls had a fun morning recess together. However, there was apparently some throwing of ice/snow during lunch recess. That is a no-no at school. Please have a quick chat with your children about this at home. Thank you!
The boys and girls are getting better at taking care of their morning business quickly. They almost all have the boot, blue bag, and winter coat routine down. Today's morning work paper focused on even and odd numbers. Later, during our regular math time, the first graders practiced place value by playing a game of Turkey Place Value Scoot. Ask your child to tell you about it!
The Question of the Day was: Have you given someone a compliment yet today? The bonus word on today's spelling test was royalty. Ellie shared her Student of the Week board. We learned that one of her talents is art, she likes reading Harry Potter, and she once went swimming with a frog on her head.
During reading, we read about Flat Stanley's adventures in the park. This was a great chapter to discuss the ups and downs of sibling relationships! Later, we read Big, Bad Bunny and completed short vowel a activities in our phonics books.
Mrs. Hensley taught the first graders' first Civics class today. Ask your child to show you his/her "How to Be a Good Citizen" booklets.
The students shopped for books during the Scholastic Book Fair. On a related note, if you would still like to purchase books from the Scholastic reading clubs, please submit your orders by December 7. The books will be delivered before winter break. If some of the books are gifts, let me know and I will put them aside for you so your child does not see them.
At the end of the day, we closed out our study of North America by learning about the Panama Canal. The students also colored the flags of Mexico and Canada, and/or began labeling the states on a map of the United States.
Have a wonderful weekend! I will not be able to attend the family day at the Shedd Aquarium, but I am happy that so many of you will be able to fit it into your weekend plans.
We will begin exploring liquids in science next week!
