The Question of the Day was: Have you ever danced on stage? Apparently, two-thirds of the class has done so! The super bonus word on today's spelling test was fascinating.
Will shared his Student of the Week board. We learned that he wants to be a gold miner, he has been to the Grand Canyon, and he likes to play hockey.
Morning work was completing the Anansi group projects. Interesting details were added to the background papers. However, some groups had colored over the words they had written making them illegible. Therefore, they had to do the writing portion again.
We continued reading Esio Trot. Mr. Hoppy's plan has now been revealed to us. Ask your child about his pet store trips and the tortoise catcher!
The specials of the day were P.E. and Civics. The students learned what makes a good rule and what characteristics make a good leader. They each decided who would be the best leader in the zoo. Ask your child about the story and on what he/she based his/her choice.
During math, the students used bar models to represent a variety of addition and subtraction situations. This involved reading/listening carefully to the word problems, identifying the information given, and thinking about what was being asked. Many students, when given a problem with two numbers, will simply add the numbers together no matter the situation described. We will keep working on this next week!
During science/reading/social studies, the students were given a tour of the Africa bulletin board, the Africa exploration area, and the earth materials area. We read the book Hill of Fire. It tells the story of the formation of Mt. Paricutin in Mexico. Ask your child to tell you about the farmer and El Monstruo. After creating mini vocabulary books with words from the story, the students began learning about the Ring of Fire. We looked at the world map and globe to identify volcanoes found in different countries around the Ring of Fire. This activity will be continued next week.
Valentine's Day is an ideal time for us to focus on the power of love and kindness just like the animals in Penguin in Love!
