The first graders began their day with a push-in library class. Library will take place in its usual location at its usual afternoon time again next week. After our morning meeting, we discussed essential social skills first graders can do. Of course, first graders have not really mastered them yet, but we are working on it! Which ones does your child feel he/she could put more effort into improving?
Just in time for Valentine's Day, we began a new reading book with a theme of love: Roald Dahl's Esio Trot. Ask your child to tell you about Mr. Hoppy, Mrs. Silver, and Alfie!
During math, the first graders practiced another mental math strategy. They used a number line to develop the idea of decomposing to simplify facts. In short, they were looking for ways to use ten to subtract.
After lunch and Quiet Time, the students completed a spelling practice paper as Afternoon Work (instead of Morning Work). They then worked on writing pieces in their writing folders. Following this, we reviewed important events from January. The students used the idea web we generated as a group to write their own sentences for the January chapter of their memory books.
A fun experience today was visiting Ms. Murray's classroom to see the second grade family interview projects. During social studies, we read Anansi and the Moss-Covered Rock.. We discussed the following story elements: characters, setting, main idea, and plot. The first graders then worked in groups on a project about these parts of the story. I was very proud of the way they were working together! Your child has brought home his/her copy of the book. It is a fun read-aloud with lots of opportunities to change voices and be expressive. It would be great to have your child read the story to you!
We will continue reading Esio Trot tomorrow!
