Happy Chinese New Year! The first graders warmed up for the day with a Year of the Pig activity sheet. They then listened to the story of the animals on the Chinese zodiac. After this, they worked independently or with classmates to put the animals in the order that they reached the emperor. Ask your child to tell you the story. He/she should have the red banner created in class today to assist in that endeavor.
The Question of the Day was: Have you ever lost something really important? We talked about this during our morning meeting and then added to our tooth charts because two students lost teeth yesterday! The Fun Fact of the Day was: A professional soccer game is 90 minutes long. Later in the day, Africa was introduced as the Continent of the Month. Did you know that soccer is the most popular sport in Africa?
Our math lesson about the inverse relationship of addition and subtraction was cut short by a surprise fire drill. The fire drill was not announced ahead of time so we had to go outside without coats. Afterwards, we discussed why the fire department wanted us to do this.
The two specials classes of the day were ASL and STEAM. During the third quarter, Music will be replaced by STEAM. However, Ms. Aldrin was not available today. Instead, a substitute teacher came to the classroom and presented a lesson about inventions and inventors. The work completed by the students will be passed on to Ms. Aldrin.
During science, the boys and girls continued making rock observations. Today, we added the element of water to the investigation. Ask your child what he/she observed when the rocks were placed in water. After ending the observation portion of the lesson, the students were told the names of the rocks: scoria, basalt, and tuff. These rocks came from volcanoes! We will learn more about volcanoes in the days ahead.
Parents, please check backpack mail for notes about Valentine's Day, Volunteering for Day 100, and Field Trip Chaperoning. Thank you!
Taste of Europe takes place tomorrow!
