The Question of the Day was: Did you wear snow pants today?Morning work was spelling practice followed by making more flowers for Ferdinand. Then, we read the book Winter Barn which described a farmer's daily chores. After this, we were ready to go on our trip to Historic Wagner Farm! Yippee! Unfortunately, our departure was delayed by the absence of the long yellow vehicle which was supposed to take us there. Fortunately, that gave us time to learn fascinating information from the book True or False: Farm Animals. Even more fortunately, the folks at Wagner Farm were very accommodating and agreed to wait for us!
When we finally reached the farm, the class learned a little about the history of Wagner Farm. They then participated in two classes, one that focused on chickens and one that focused on cows. We were lucky to have two animal guests join us: Lulu the Hen and Carrie the Calf. Following the classes, the boys and girls went shopping in a country store. They had a shopping list of items to look for, but not enough money to buy them. Ask your child how they were able to get everything on the shopping list! After lunch, we went outside to visit the animals. It was thoughtful of the farmer to shovel a path for us before we arrived. We saw chickens, horses, and cows outside. We even took a quick peek inside the barn, but didn't see the barn cat.
Back at school, we talked about the trip, what we learned, and how we had been bucket fillers. Then, the students generated wonderful ideas about how we could thank Wagner Farm for our field trip. So, before heading to music class, the boys and girls signed a thank you poster/letter written by the class and worked on individual pictures/letters. I will mail them to Wagner Farm tomorrow.
We did not get a chance to explore the farm exhibits inside or spend too much time outside today. Visiting the farm together on a family field trip would be a great followup to our classroom adventure today. You could even buy some farm fresh eggs!
