The boys and girls in 104 began the day with a couple guest teachers while I worked elsewhere in the building. They completed a science assessment about liquids and then worked on short e exercises in their phonics book. After I returned, we went over the schedule for the rest of the day during our morning meeting.
This was followed by another session of holiday card making. This time, each student was given the name of a classmate. Without revealing the names, the students then created cards for their secret friends. The students were instructed to include a holiday message as well as least one compliment in their cards. The cards were delivered later in the day. Ask your child what he/she wrote to his/her classmate!
We had a fun math lesson about using place value to describe the values of digits in numbers up to 1,000. We even used a Venn diagram. Part of the lesson involved giving a thorough spoken/written explanation to a math question. Before heading to lunch, the first graders learned to sign a variety of holiday words in ASL. Ask your child to teach you some signs!
Other events of the day included a Bill Nye video about matter and art with Ms. Pearlmutter. Finally, it was time to travel to another continent! The first graders had their passports stamped and then entered South America. They sampled a variety of tasty, spicy, sweet, and seconds-worthy foods from our continent of the month. Ask your child about his/her favorite items! Let's keep trying new things!
The first graders will learn about the history of gingerbread tomorrow.
