After beginning the day with a word search about school words, the first graders participated in a spelling lesson. They learned how to put words in alphabetical order and then practiced this with this week’s short a and short i spelling words.
We then went outside to the butterfly garden where the boys and girls used collection buckets to gather natural items for a project. Later in the day, the sticks, grasses, seeds, and leaves were used to create individual “nature names.” The projects are now on display in the classroom. Ask your child to describe his/her creation!
During reading, we reread Chrysanthemum. During this session, the first graders were instructed to pay special attention to the times when the other children in Chrysanthemum’s class teased her with unkind words or actions. Each time this happened, we crumpled up part of a large paper heart. At the end of the story, we tried to fix the heart, but we were not able to make it look like it did before. Even bandages did not help! This was a good visual reminder to do the following: “Before you speak, think and be smart; it’s hard to fix a wrinkled heart.”
Other events of the day included organizing our desks, going to P.E., sharing how to say hello in different languages, and looking at the rest of the summer postcards.
Wednesday is Curriculum Night for Grades 1 and 2.
