The first graders practiced their spelling words and read the second chapter of Flat Stanley today. Ask your child to describe three advantages of being flat! In the midst of this morning activities, a rather impressive centipede decided to venture forth across the classroom floor. A minor commotion about this ensued and was then quelled by the swift relocation of our multi-legged visitor.
Following indoor recess, we worked on a special holiday project. The first graders in Room 104 have traditionally been given the honor of making decorations for the Christmas tree placed in the school's main hallway. This year, the boys and girls decorated gingerbread men (or were they gingerbread Flat Stanleys?). They also colored some plain ornaments to add sparkle to the tree. We will try to learn about as many holidays as possible this year!
Lunch recess was outside. Cue the teacher happy dance!
During math, the first graders used blocks and their math brain cells to write different names for the same number. This involved the application of place value concepts. For example, 32 can be represented as 3 tens 2 ones, 2 tens 12 ones, 1 ten 22 ones, or 0 tens 32 ones.
The boys and girls enjoyed hearing The Story of the Trouble Dolls from Guatemala. They then made their own trouble or worry dolls to take home. There was some powerful magic in the classroom as those trouble dolls took shape. Give them a try at home and see what happens!
The first graders took home their leaf creature projects today. Yesterday, they received copies of Eating Fractions. This is a book I no longer use in class; they may keep the books or pass them on. The boys and girls also emptied their daily folders of odds and ends from weeks gone by today. Finally, please look for a note from Ms. Wojcik about the Scholastic Book Fair taking place tomorrow during library time.
