The Question of the Day was: Did you play in the snow yesterday? Morning work was a phonics review of consonants. Our morning meeting and a reading of Don't Call Me Pig! was followed by a test about consonants.
As part of our yearlong study of continents and cultures around the world, the students received passports today! They filled in important information about themselves and added stickers with symbols that represented three North American countries. Some students did not know how to spell their middle names, their complete date of birth, or where they were born. The latter included confusion between states and countries. Please go over this personal information with your child. Also, when we were addressing the envelopes for our Thanksgiving letters, a handful of students did not know their own addresses. Please check if your child knows his/her address (and your phone number). Thank you!
We practiced writing the D'Nealian lowercase letters l and t today. This was followed by the first graders' first class in American Sign Language today. Ask your child to teach you some of the words he/she learned!
During math, the boys and girls wrote numbers in different ways. We focused on the expanded form and drawing quick pictures. We also counted our pajama donations. We are up to 13 pajamas now. Keep them coming!
After reading The Recess Queen, the first graders watched a video to learn more about properties of matter. Finally, following art class with Ms. Pearlmutter, it was time for the much anticipated Taste of North America.! Before entering the classroom, each student presented his/her passport to me to have it stamped. They then used their senses of sight, smell, touch, hearing, and, of course, taste to enjoy samples of food from around North America. Thank you to all the parents who provided food or helped during the actual event! Ask your child what he/she would like to eat again soon!
The first graders will receive a new reading book tomorrow.
