Happy snowy Monday! The Question of the Day was: Did your parents receive your letter in the mail? The majority of students answered yes so I can now reveal what all the secrecy was about! The first graders learned the parts and proper format of a friendly letter. We read Splat Says Thank You! and then brainstormed ideas for which to thank our parents. After this, the students wrote personal letters to their parents. Later, they addressed envelopes. Finally, with the help of two parents whose children had once been in 104, we took a secret field trip! We walked to the neighborhood mailbox, sealed the letters with a kiss, and sent them on their way. The boys and girls were very excited about surprising their parents. Parents, I hope you enjoyed being on the receiving end of this Thanksgiving surprise!
The boys and girls had three guest teachers while I attended a meeting this morning. They were introduced to their new spelling words, worked in their phonics books, had indoor recess, and read The Three Little Javelinas. When I returned to 104, it was time for math. The first graders used place value to describe the values of digits in 2-digit numbers. We also counted how many pajamas we have so far in our pajama drive. Ask your child for an update!
After indoor recess and Quiet Time, the first graders went upstairs to P.E. During science, they reviewed properties of solids by playing Guess My Property and completing an activity sheet that focused on one property. We closed out the day with a social studies lesson about Native Americans in the Pacific Northwest. We concentrated on the tradition of totem poles. After looking at photos and a poster of totem poles, the boys and girls enjoyed the legend Whale in the Sky before beginning to make their own totem pole models. Ask your child about the thunderbird!
We will enjoy Taste of North America tomorrow!
