Happy Monday! The Question of the Day was: Did you come to Bellapalooza on Saturday? I spotted quite a few of my new friends running around the turf on that day! After taking care of our morning business, we read the short book Andy, That’s My Name by Tomie dePaola. This led to our first spelling session of the year. The first graders received spelling books that will be kept in school. Our first group of spelling words focuses on the short a and short i sounds.
Before going outside to recess, we read the big book My Name is Johari. The boys and girls noticed many similarities between this book and Chrysanthemum. Ask your child for some examples! One new event in today’s story was the teacher asking her students to learn about their names. The students in 104 will do the same for their homework this week.
Following recess, we practiced having a fire drill. We discussed the reasons for drills, the importance of taking them seriously, and the correct procedures to follow. Then, we acted out what was learned. Ask your child to describe what he/she will do if the fire alarm rings at school.
During math, we examined a September calendar page and noted how it was constructed. The students then numbered the boxes in a blank calendar grill. After that, they wrote important events in the correct boxes. Many students also added special symbols for the events and/or decorated the border. The calendars were sent home today.
The first graders received their first homework packets today. We looked over the activities together and discussed expectations. The children then wrote the reading/spelling/fun sheet assignments in their student planners. This work will be submitted in the big manila envelope at the end of the week.
Our science lesson of the day was an introduction to making objective observations. Scientists use their five senses to learn about the world around them. The boys and girls sat in a circle around our chrysanthemum plant and, with support and sharing, made observations about the plant. We used our senses of sight, touch, and smell for this activity. The students also drew what they saw and labeled its parts (mainly the flowers and the leaves). Ask your child about his/her observations!
The final activity of the day was attending music class with Ms. Lambert. This specials class takes place at the end of the day so the first graders will pack up and take their bags/coats with them. Ms. Lambert will bring the Room 104 students to the auditorium and then dismiss them at the end of the day.
The first graders will participate in another name activity tomorrow!
