The Question of the Day was: Have you ever wanted to fly? After taking care of their morning business, the first graders participated in financial literacy with Ms. Weindruch. They learned about goods today. Ask your child for some examples!
Other than financial literacy and P.E., the rest of the day was devoted to one project! We started by reading the book Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert. Leaf Man was blown all over the place meeting lots of other leaf creatures along the way. The boys and girls created their own leaf creatures and stories based on the book.
After reading the book, we took our collection buckets outside and looked for leaves with different shapes, sizes, and colors. The first graders were very successful leaf gatherers! Back in the classroom, the boys and girls used the leaves to design their leaf creatures. The leaves wanted to be a variety of things. Ask your child what his/her leaf creature turned out to be!

When the leaf creatures were complete, it was time to think about what kind of adventures they would have. I modeled writing adventures for my Leaf Frog. The first graders used a writing template to guide their writing. When the ideas were written, each student visited me for a writing conference. We looked the writing over for mistakes in spelling and conventions. Even more importantly. we looked at the writing to see if there were ways to improve it. We practiced proofreading and revising. The final step in the project was to rewrite the stories on fancy paper. The completed projects will be on display in the hallway soon!
We will learn about Veteran's Day tomorrow.
