Happy First Day of November! My little friends came in pretty calm this morning. Halloween must have been exhausting! We began the day with a fun picture search activity sheet. After this, the boys and girls practiced reading, using, and writing the Unit 8 spelling words.
During reading, we discussed wonderings about specific parts of The Country Mouse and the City Mouse. Then, the boys and girls drew pictures showing how they imagined the mice looked when they heard the cat.
Following a recess break, the first graders completed a quick show-what-you-know about consonant sounds. They then began working in their phonics books. This phonics practice will become a regular part of our weekly activities from now on.
Before heading to lunch, we watched a video about fractions. During Quiet Time, we read the funny story Turkey Trick or Treat. Ms. Wojcik reported that behavior in the library was much better this week. Some students chose to check out the same book or books by the same author thereby creating their own little book and author reading clubs.
We began learning about North America in social studies. First, we examined a map legend/key on a map of the world in our Map Champ Atlas books. We read an introductory book about different aspects of North America and identified its boundaries.
We previewed the events coming up in the month of November and created calendars for the month. It is going to be another busy one! While students worked on their calendars, they took turns posing for pictures "holding" our class wreath. Once all the pieces were glued on the frame, the result was quite impressive. It will soon be on display at the Shedd Aquarium. Details about this and about voting for it as your favorite will be sent home in the near future.
Tommy shared his Student of the Week board. We learned that he would like to be a scientist when he grows up, he has been skiing, and one of his dreams involves wrestling a bear.
Enjoy the day off school tomorrow. Next week, we will attend our first play and learn about Veteran's Day.
