Finally! Pumpkin Day! Room 104 would have to take top prize for being the most orange room in the school today. The day began with the exciting news that Ms. Miller and Mr. Kosko wanted to film Bell TV from our classroom today. Everyone at school saw us in all our orange splendor when they watched the morning announcements today. The first graders were very impressed by this.
The entire day was pumpkins, pumpkins, pumpkins. Here is an outline of our day. Be sure to ask your child for details!
Thank you to all the parents who helped make this day special by working on the Taste portion of the day and/or volunteering in the classroom. The extra hands were certainly needed this afternoon!
On Monday, we will count the seeds that were scooped out of the pumpkins today and see how close our estimates were to the actual amounts.
Parents, please check home folders for a green note about signing up for conferences on Report Card Day. Thank you!
The entire day was pumpkins, pumpkins, pumpkins. Here is an outline of our day. Be sure to ask your child for details!
- We read a poem about pumpkins.
- We made Pumpkinhead hats to wear during the day.
- We read the following fiction and nonfiction books: Perfect Pumpkins, Pumpkin Jack, Pumpkins by Mary Lyn Ray (my favorite pumpkin book), and Splat the Cat and the Pumpkin-Picking Plan
- We posed for photographs with pumpkins and pumpkinhead friends..
- We made life cycle models of the life cycle of a pumpkin. These projects are now part of an interactive bulletin board display. Ask your child to describe this project!
- We measured our individual pumpkins and recorded the data. We drew our pumpkins and the pumpkin plants as part of the activities for our pumpkin math books. too.
- We followed step-by-step directions to draw pumpkins..
- We learned about the parts of a pumpkin. Ask your child what the peduncle of a pumpkin is!
- We counted the ribs and estimated the number of seeds that would be in big pumpkins.
- We worked in our table groups to scoop out the seeds and pulp from the big pumpkins. Some of us were a tad hesitant about this. Others attacked the task with gusto. Do you have any predictions about how your child reacted? :)
- We tasted delicious food made from pumpkins. Ask your child what his/her favorite item was!
- We thought about what we wanted our individual pumpkins to look like when they were decorated and drew sketches of our ideas.
- We decorated our pumpkins with our fifth grade buddies. The fabulous pumpkin creations were sent home to be enjoyed!
- We had a blast on Pumpkin Day!
