The first graders began the day by cutting, folding, and gluing to create pyramids. After our morning meeting, it was time for the Unit 5 spelling test. The super bonus word was boomerang. Later in the day, Aidan shared his Student of the Week board. We learned his favorite food is mac and cheese, he has been apple picking, and he would like to be a police officer when he grows up.
Following an early recess and bathroom break, we headed out on our second field trip of the year. We walked a few short blocks east to our neighborhood firehouse. The firefighters gave our group a tour of the firehouse including the living quarters upstairs and downstairs. The boys and girls learned a great deal about fire safety and saw what a firefighter looks like when he/she is wearing all his/her gear. Many first graders tried on the boots and coat. Everyone climbed into the fire truck or fire engine. It was exciting when the firefighters were called out on a run while we were there! Ask your child for details!
Back at school, the first graders ate lunch, enjoyed lunch recess, practiced being good sports in P.E., and worked on their Shapes PowerPoint projects. They also began learning about houses around the world by reading This is My House. Parents, look for this book in backpacks next week as it will be needed for the must-do homework assignment.
Before leaving for the day, I checked my mailbox and discovered a package labeled Perishable, Live Materials, and Open Immediately. Here is a photo of what was inside. (The nose man magnet is in the picture for scale.) Ask your child what he/she thinks was delivered for us!
