Happy Friday! After morning business and morning work, the first graders took the Unit 4 Spelling Test. The super bonus word was gratitude. Next, Barsbeck shared his Student of the Week board. We learned that his sister is one year older than he is, he likes chess, and his family is from Kyrgyzstan.
The boys and girls made observations of their Growing Wheat in Straws investigation. They noted tiny white roots and pale green sprouts. Later, we spent time with our brassica plants. The plants are now growing in all directions and most have flowers in bloom. The first graders learned about pollination. Since there are no bees or other pollinators in the classroom or even any wind to spread pollen, we have to pollinate our brassica plants. Today, several students had the opportunity to do this. Everyone wrote about pollination on their observation sheets. Ask your child about it! All students will be able to take part in the pollination next week.
Another big event of the day was preparing blank books to become field trip books. Each time we take a trip, we will create a chapter about it for this book. At the end of the year, the students will have fantastic first grade field trip books!
Other events of the day included art, reading the story The Curious Gardener, and working on the world map project.
We will take a walking trip to the neighborhood firehouse next week!
