Happy First Day of April! The first graders began the day with an open-ended writing task. They were given a picture of a dinosaur and instructed to write about him/her. Ask your child what he/she decided to do!
After this, we looked at the spelling words for the week. They all have double consonants plus y. Then, the boys and girls moved their desks to their new table spots. The recess break was preceded by a reflection of the many activities, units of study, and events that took place in the month of March. These quick ideas were used as the jumping off point for the first graders to write their own March chapters for their First Grade Memory Books.
Today's Inner Explorer encouraged the students to focus on soothing sounds and see how they felt. During math, we practiced modeling two-digit subtraction with regrouping. The specials class of the day was P.E. We also worked on our timeline projects in the computer lab.
Australia is our new Continent of the Month. I introduced the continent by reading Alexander and the Terrrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. We looked at the map and globe to see how far Australia is from where we live.
Finally, the boys and girls created their April Calendar of Events. They were very excited about some of the things that will take place this month. Ask your child to show you the calendar and talk about what will take place in April.
Tomorrow is the last art class of the year with Ms. Pearlmutter. Please make sure your child is wearing clothing suitable for a project that could result in some mess!
