The Question of the Day was: Have you ever used tangrams? Morning work involved using tangrams! The first graders created their own pictures, attempted to create animal pictures from templates, and colored their own tangram pieces. The final challenge was to put all seven shapes back into the shape of a square. See if you can do it!
The super bonus word for the Unit 24 spelling test was headstrong. We explored our sense of smell during Inner Explorer. Gabriel shared his Student of the Week board. We learned that he enjoys music, his favorite animal is the giraffe, and he has relatives in Argentina.
The two specials classes of the day were Library and Civics. During the latter, Mrs. Hensley invited Ms. Miller to the classroom as a guest speaker. She spoke to the children about the responsibilities of being principal of Bell School. Ask your child what Ms. Miller felt were the cost and benefits of her position! The first graders also wrote examples of how they are responsible in school and at home.
We read about more animals in the book Cute as an Axolotl. During science, the students learned about the meaning of dinosaur names. They were introduced to some of the word parts that make up many dinosaur names. For example, stego means plated and saurus means lizard, so stegosaurus means plated lizard. The first graders even created their own imaginary dinosaurs using word parts.
Finally, we ended the week with Buddy Time! The fifth graders prepared an "I Have, Who Has" game about famous deaf people and also practiced their ASL skills with their first grade buddies. We will spend time with our buddies again next week when we take a field trip to the Chicago Children's Museum together!
The Sugar Maple Festival takes place this weekend at North Park Village Nature Center. It is a free family event.
We will continue learning about Asia next week We will also start a new math unit.
Have a splendid weekend!
