Happy rainy Thursday! The Question of the Day was: Have you ever danced in the rain? The boys and girls wrote about the Day 8 egg developments in their egg books for Morning Work.
After this, we read the book If You Plant a Seed. However, during the story we were interrupted by unusual noises coming from the coop in the back of the room. Upon investigation, we discovered that we had unexpected visitors in the classroom: two chickens! Roxie and Lacey are city chickens. They are visiting all the first grade classrooms this week.
The boys and girls in 104 were super excited to see the hens in our classroom! While the first graders worked on spelling, math, and handwriting lessons at their desks, everyone was able to come to the coop and pet Roxie and Lacey. We left the room to go outside for recess, but it was raining so we had to come back inside. We were surprised by what we found. One of the hens had laid an egg! We think it was Roxie because the egg was brown and Roxie has brown earlobes. Lacey has white earlobes. The color of a hen's ears often gives a clue as to what her egg will look like.
Since it was raining outside, we had time to give Lacey and Roxie a chicken recess inside! Everyone formed a circle on the rug. The hens were placed in the circle and we watched them walk, peck, flap their wings, poop (very gross and intriguing), and eat. Roxie decided to fly! She flew right out of the chicken circle and landed on Table 2. Wow! Roxie also decided she wanted to explore some more so we let her walk around the classroom a bit. Both hens loved the dried meal worms they received as a treat.
The grand finale of the city chicken visit was being able to hold a chicken. Some first grade friends were nervous, but everyone did hug a chicken today! She felt warm and her feet were a bit pokey. In the afternoon, we read the books Edward the Emu and Edwina the Emu during Quiet Time. After this, the boys and girls wrote and drew about the morning's visit from the chickens. Ask your child about his/her chicken experiences from today!
Cadence, Phil, and Leo turned the eggs in the incubator. The boys and girls also wrote about the Day 9 egg developments. We could see from photos and Minerva Louise's eggs that the embryo looks more birdlike now and feathers have started to form.
Today's specials class was Music. This was followed by Taste of Australia. We had quite a spread of food from Australia and New Zealand. Kiwi, Anzac biscuits, licorice, and Tim Tams were among the favorites. There were even several Vegemite fans!
We will see the school play based on the book Charlotte's Web tomorrow.
