The Question of the Day was: Have you ever touched a real snake? We discussed the responses during our morning meeting.
Our new reading book is Make Way for Ducklings by Robert McCloskey. The first graders enjoyed a first reading of the story, answered questions about the story elements, and then made duckling stick puppets. Your child may take home his/her copy of the book to complete one of the homework packet assignments, but be sure to sent the book back again!
We reviewed the standards of size, slant, and spacing in handwriting before learning the proper formation of the lowercase letters a and d. The students used air pencils and real pencils to trace and write these manuscript letters in one stroke.
During math, we began checking the answers on our first math test. I modeled reading the directions carefully and stressed the importance of reaching a solution step-by-step. We will continue to check the work a little bit at a time until we have gone over all the problems together.
A very loud and upset kindergartener visited our room for a break while all the first graders were sitting on the rug. It was the perfect opportunity to practice our focusing attention skills. It was quite the challenge, but we were quite successful at blocking out the distraction.
Following P.E., the boys and girls attempted to identify plants by smell. Rosemary, oregano, and basil were passed around to sniff. We then moved on to another group of plants that people use when preparing food: grains. Today's focus was on wheat. Each student planted a wheat seed in a straw. We did not use soil because we want to see the roots when they begin to grow.
Our school day came to a close with social studies. We identified and used the Contents, Index, and Glossary in our Map Champ Atlas books. This introduction will help us learn more about our world when we use the atlas books in future lessons.
We will work in our First Grade Memory Books tomorrow.
Parents, please look for a permission slip for the Fire House trip in your child's green folder today. Also, please remember to place your Picture Day orders. Thank you!
