Dear Friends,
It's time to give the class pets we hardly ever see a chance to be the center of attention. Let's hear it for the worms! A compost bin with red wiggler worms usually stands in our classroom. Ms. Whiting, who has helped us learn a great deal about vermiculture (composting with worms), is taking care of our compost bin during the school closure. Red wiggler worms are the best kind of worms for inside compost bins. Let's learn more about the worms you often find outside: earthworms!
Question of the Day: Do you like touching worms? Why or why not? Comment below!
Morning Work: Choose one of the following activities.
1. Go outside. Look for earthworms. If you find one, carefully pick it up. Put it on a paper plate or in some other container. What does it look like? What is it doing? Draw and write your observations. Please put the earthworm back outside when you are finished.
2. Read The Diary of a Worm by Doreen Cronin. This link will take you to a read-aloud video version of the book. Then, complete this sequencing activity.
3. Read all about Squirmin' Herman the Worm at this site. Then, label the parts of an earthworm on this diagram.
- Ask a parent to take a picture to share with your classmates!
