The Question of the Day was: Do you brush your teeth every day? All responded with a yes. However, when I changed the question to Do you brush your teeth twice each day?, there were some customers who responded no. Whatever his/her response may have been, your child received a toothbrush to keep up with good dental hygiene!
Morning Work was a heart symmetry activity packet. This was followed by the Unit 19 spelling practice paper. After this, we looked at examples of patterns in math and the students were given a pattern challenge. They successfully figured out how to fill in the numbers of Pascal's Triangle! Click here for background information about the triangle. This will all become more relevant in the years to come, but looking for patterns is a great way to stretch one's mind. Your child has brought home a blank template to give you a math challenge, too!
Following our interlude with triangles, we moved on to phonics. The boys and girls worked on identifying long o and short o words. Before taking a recess break, we read Penguin in Love. After recess, the students were given copies of It Takes a Village which they each read with a partner. They were asked to figure out the meaning of the title of the book. We had a nice discussion about this after the reading was complete. Ask your child to tell you the story!
During Junior Great Books, we revisited two scenes in the story Those Shoes. The students responded in writing to a prompt about whether or not they would have worn the Mr. Alfrey shoes back to class. They also drew pictures showing what they thought Jeremy might have been dreaming about those shoes.
Today's math lesson was a review of the main skills and concepts we have covered in Chapter 3. There will be a test tomorrow. Students have brought home their books today.
There were two specials classes today: library and civics. During Quiet Time, we read the book Rocks in My Pockets. Finally, the fifth grade buddies joined us in Room 104. They had each researched a famous African American and were tasked with teaching their little buddies about him/her. Together, the big and little buddies created comic strips about the historical figures. Guest speakers will teach us even more about this topic tomorrow!
