Joyous Monday! The Question of the Day was: Do you like to play in the mud? Morning work was a subtraction paper based on last Friday's lesson.
After our morning meeting, we extended our farm animals activities with a writing piece. The boys and girls picked what they felt to be the best animal on the farm. After I modeled writing my opinion piece about the duck, the students followed a general outline to write details about their own opinions. I conferenced with each student to help them see how they could stretch their ideas. I also edited spelling, capitalization, and punctuation errors. Each student then rewrote his/her piece on a new piece of paper. Ask your child what he/she wrote!
Following morning recess, we read and discussed the book Hill of Fire. The story is based on the actual formation of Mt. Paricutin in Mexico. The boys and girls then created vocabulary hats to take home. Burro was a new word for many!
Today's math lesson focused on finding differences on a number line to develop the mental strategy of dcomposing in order to simplify subtraction facts. The number ten played a key role in our efforts.
The specials class of the day was P.E. We are on Week 2 of the Great Pencil Challenge. The pencils are getting smaller, but they are all still here!
In social studies, we used our Map Champ Atlas books to learn more about Africa. After this, we used the wall map during science to locate volcanoes on the Ring of Fire. Ask your child to show you the Ring of Fire on a globe or world map!
The first graders will read a Scholastic News article about a Frozen Hotel! The lesson will end with another opinion writing piece.
