Happy Friday! The Question of the Day was: Were you a bucket filler yesterday? Everyone responded yes! Look for the yellow letter in your child's home folder for examples showing how he/she was a bucket filler.
Morning work was a review paper about the three states of matter. After this, it was time for the Unit 17 spelling test. The super bonus word was forward.. Following ASL class, Isaac shared his Student of the Week board. We learned that he know a lot about Pokemon, he makes gingerbread cookies every Christmas, and he wants to be a good person. The latter is a goal we should all have!
After a recess break outside, we reflected on what we had learned during the month of January. The students generated a list of ideas which I wrote on the board. Then, they used those ideas to each write their own January chapters for their First Grade Memory Books. Ask your child what he/she chose to include!
Today's math lesson centered on using the count back and look for an addend strategies to help remember basic subtraction facts. The students also completed a mid-chapter review page.
Following lunch recess, the students enjoyed their first STEAM class of the year with Ms. Aldrin. It looks like there was some animal research taking place today. Ask your child for details!
During science, we returned to the rocks we investigated on Wednesday. Today, we added the element of water to the observation time. Ask your child what he/she noticed when the three different rocks were placed in the water! It was also revealed that the rocks were volcanic rocks: basalt, tuff, and scoria. We will learn more about volcanoes next week.
Finally, during social studies, we read and discussed the book Galimoto by Karen Lynn Williams. The boys and girls then thought about what kind of galimoto they would like to build and planned its design. This included developing a list of materials they might use to make it happen. Ask your child to tell you what a galimoto is and to show you what he/she would like to make!
Have a wonderful weekend!
