Welcome to another month of learning and excitement in first grade! The Question of the Day was: Have you ever seen a groundhog? Morning Work involved coloring some nifty Groundhog Day glasses as well as assembling and reading a mini-book about Groundhog Day. Later in the day, we read Good Morning, Groundhog!
A new month means new desk spots in Room 104. Ask your child where he/she sits now. Also, as we are halfway through the school year, the supply caddies have been restocked with new crayons, colored pencils, and glue sticks.
Another new development today was the introduction of the Great Pencil Challenge! Each student received a new pencil with a little flag with his/her name on it. This is the pencil that will be used during the school day. Students will now keep their pencil cases in their backpacks for before or after school needs. The school pencils will be handed in each evening to be sharpened for the next day. The challenge is to take care of your special pencil and use it for as long as possible! How long do you think your child will keep track of his/her pencil?
This week's spelling unit theme is Words Writers Use. These are words that are often misspelled by beginning writers. We looked at the words and looked for ways to help us remember how they are spelled. After this, the boys and girls read the farm animal riddles they wrote last week. We successfully matched the descriptions to the animals.
A new month also means that we create a calendar of events for the month. There are many things to look forward to in the weeks ahead! Ask your child to show you his/her February calendar. An item not listed on the calendar took place today. Ms. Miller and Mr. Kosko introduced Mr. Ball to us. He is now Bell School's second assistant principal. Welcome!
In today's math lesson we continued to practice using the "make a ten" strategy to recall addition facts. The specials class of the day was P.E. During civics, the students acted out the story The Little Red Hen. Ask your child what the story has to do with the topic of justice!
Finally, the students received a tour of the new science area in the back of the room. We have moved on to the study of rocks and other earth materials. Our first activity used last week's rock report homework. Each student received someone else's rock. As I read the rock descriptions, the boys and girls raised their hands if they thought they had the matching rock. We weren't quite as successful with this matching activity as we were with the farm animal riddles.
We will visit Historic Wagner Farm tomorrow! Students should bring a lunch to eat at the farm. Also, we will most likely go outside to visit the animals while we are there. We may encounter mud, so wearing boots would be a good idea.
Be sure to check home folders for another trip slip (in two parts) and a list of field trip chaperones for the rest of the year. Thank you!
