The Question of the Day was: Are you ready to have an exciting day? The morning message seen above provided a clue as to what would soon take place. Following a spelling paper to practice the Unit 14 words, we looked over the schedule for the day.
Next, the boys and girls began coloring paper matryoshka dolls. They will assemble the dolls another time so that they can stand on the desks of their creators. While the students worked on their nesting dolls, I called them to the front to participate in the A New Coat for Anna project with Ms. Wagner and me. The students rolled up sleeves, put on gloves, received cloth napkins, and dipped the napkins in baths of red dye (food coloring). When the cloth had become a lovely shade of pink, the students squeezed out extra water and we clipped the napkins on the clothesline in our classroom. The cloths were dry by the end of the day. Expect to see this project come home tomorrow!

Following indoor morning recess, we worked on the short o sound in our phonics books. During math, we explored comparing three digit numbers. The specials class of the day was Music.
Today's science lesson continued our investigation of matter with a candy cane experiment. The students made predictions about what would happen when candy canes were placed in cold water, warm water, and vinegar. Then, we tried it. The boys and girls eagerly observed what was happening in their cups. We stopped along the way to share what we noticed. After candy canes had been put in all three liquids, the first graders wrote and drew what happened on an observation sheet. We also looked at bigger candy canes placed in the same liquids, as well as in vegetable oil. Ask your child about the experience!
The final class of the day was social studies. We read The Mysterious Giant of Barletta, an Italian folktale retold by Tomie dePaola. There is a big surprise in the story! Most of the students received copies of the book to share with you tonight. They were encouraged to read the story to you and then stop to ask what you think will happen next at a certain point in the book. I am short several copies of the book from my class set so if your child did not bring one home today, he/she will do so when other classmates return their books.
The Bell School Talent Show takes place tomorrow!
