It was a day of mystery in Room 104! After responding to the Question of the Day (Do you like to dance?), the boys and girls used math to solve a mystery picture for morning work. Next, during our morning meeting, two mystery boxes were unveiled. We are fortunate to have a northern goshawk and a red fox on display in our classroom during January. Both of these predators are found in many places around the world including Europe, our continent of the month.
We focused on the lowercase D'Nealian letters i and u during handwriting today. After this, we moved on to math. The boys and girls wrote the names of 3-digit numbers today. We worked together to solve a problem in our math books. I modeled how to break the problem down into steps, how to draw pictures or make notations to focus one's thinking, and how important it is to read carefully. After I, ahem, made a mistake in the problem, I figured out what to do by reading the description again.
Following morning recess, we "visited" the Vancouver Aquarium for a great science lesson about camouflage. This was a live streaming event during which we were able to ask and respond to questions from the program host. We were able to watch sharks, rays, and a sea turtle swimming in the background. The students learned that color, counter-shading, and body shape are different types of camouflage strategies used by a variety of animals. Ask your child for details!
Before going to lunch, we had time to talk about the program, as well as read some relevant selections from books about ocean life and animals. Our discussion lead to other adaptations that animals use to survive. I shared the difference between being poisonous and being venomous. See if your child remembers!
We listened to another Stella Dino story after lunch. Then it was time for a group of girls to take their first Chinese dance lesson. While they were out of the room, the rest of the class explored solids by moving marbles from one place to another with the use of marble run kits and marble runs of their own construction. The items used today will be available for indoor recess exploration. When the group returned from their Chinese dance lesson, they taught their friends a new way to sit on the rug and how to make a flower with their hands. We look forward to learning more from our mini-teachers!
The specials class of the day was P.E. When the students returned to 104, it was time for our second special event of the day. Ms. Bowker's first grade class joined us for this event. Mr. Qiao invited guests to our classroom to teach us about the Chinese New Year. The students learned about the Chinese zodiac and Chinese New Year's traditions. They listened to a story and then worked in small groups to place symbols of the Chinese New Year on a picture of a house.
There will be a substitute teacher in Room 104 tomorrow.
