Happy Monday! The Question of the Day was: Did you ever catch a frog? After finding their new desk spots, the boys and girls completed a number search activity sheet for the year 2020.
This week's spelling words each include at least one of the following digraphs: ch, -tch, sh, th, wr, or -ck. We examined the spelling patterns, discussed words multiple meanings, and solved analogies using the Unit 13 words. Ask your child which two letter combinations are only found at the end of words, after a vowel sound.
During reading, we read Under the Lemon Moon in our Junior Great Books. Ask your child to tell you about the story and what he/she wondered about it.
Following recess, the boys and girls participated in a Second Step lesson about how to ask for help. They role-played being assertive rather than passive or aggressive. Here are the steps for asking for help: 1. Say excuse me. 2. State the problem. 3. Ask for help. in a calm manner.
During math, we practiced place value skills with three-digit numbers. They used number wheels to make numbers using clues based on place value. For example, "I am thinking of a number that is two more than 250. What is it?" These directions were then followed up with a second clue such as. "What number is three tens more than 252?"
After lunch recess, the students wrote their homework assignments in their student planners. They then enjoyed Library class with Ms. Wojcik. Back in the classroom, I share some Flat Stanley emails. It was exciting to hear from the flat one!
Following Civics, we found the states Flat Stanley has already visited on the map of the United States. We then moved on the world map to begin learning about our Continent of the Month: Europe. The first graders received a tour of the Europe bulletin board and exploration area. They also learned some basic facts about European geography. The lesson ended with a fun book: A Big Quiet House: A Yiddish Folktale from Eastern Europe.
We will get together with our buddies tomorrow afternoon!
