The Question of the Day was: Did you stay up until midnight on New Year's Eve. Morning work was a handwriting practice paper. Your child has it in his/her home folder to share with you.
During reading, we read and discussed the Scholastic News article Meet a Bear Scientist. The students completed activities related to vocabulary, text features, and reading comprehension. I also stressed the importance of answering in complete sentences, beginning with capital letters, and ending with end-marks when responding to a question in writing.
The specials classes of the day were ASL, Art, and Computer. During computer, the first graders continued working independently on their shapes projects. Ask your child what shape(s) he/she worked on today! We also drew and wrote three-digit numbers in different ways during math class. We will revisit this on Monday.
Following lunch recess, there was another big reveal of a mystery box. This time, our tadpole habitat was inside. However, there were no longer any tadpoles inside. Now we have frogs! They are tiny frogs, but they need more space to swim and grow. The students observed as I moved them to their luxurious new home. They also saw the frogs swim up to the surface of the water to breathe. Ask your child about the frogs!
Our main science lesson involved bits and pieces of solids. The students explored containers of lima beans, pinto beans, mung beans, rice, and cornmeal using a variety of tools. They made observations about how the solids moved, what they sounded like, and which were easier to clean up than others. We will use these same solids for another activity on Monday.
