Welcome back to school! I was happy to see 18 of my first grade friends back in class today. The Question of the Day was: Did you enjoy winter break? The boys and girls wrote and drew about their experiences for morning work. Then, during our morning meeting, they shared some of their snapshots of winter break with each other.
After this, we read the book Squirrel's New Year's Resolution. The first graders sequenced the events in the story using a cut and paste activity sheet. When they finished this assignment, they colored, cut, and folded to create paper squirrels. Some even gave their squirrels party hats, nuts, and/or trees!
Following morning recess, the boys and girls made their own new year's resolutions. They thought about how they could be healthier, do well in school, be better friends, and help their parents in the new year. Your child's resolution sheet should be in his/her daily folder. Please go over the choices your child made with him/her in the next couple days Help him/her fine-tune the ideas and come up with a plan of action to be successful.
During math, we went over a January 2020 calendar page. Unlike Squirrel's, this one was not a nut-of-the-month calendar. :) We talked about the school events coming up this month and then the students created their own calendar pages. I did make a mistake on the events. January 31 is a day of non-attendance for students so Taste of Europe will take place on January 30.
A quick Quiet Time led to music class with Ms. Prescott. When they returned to 104, the boys and girls wrote their names on every page of their homework packets. After all, The first thing we do is always the same. We pick up our pencil and write our name. Please help reinforce this practice at home.
Today's science lesson was a review of the properties of liquids. The students then completed a Falling Bottle puzzle. Ask your child to explain this activity! The final event of the day was learning about some New Year's traditions from around the world.
We will read a Scholastic News article tomorrow.
