Welcome back from Thanksgiving break! We eased our way back into school by coloring Thanksgiving pictures and sharing special events that took place over the long weekend. The Question of the Day was: Did you enjoy Thanksgiving?
The students are sitting at new desk spots for the month of December, but they also were assigned new rug spots. It's good to change things up every now and again! Another activity we complete at the start of each month is the creation of a calendar of events. Ask your child to show you his/her December calendar.
This week's spelling words have the long i sound spelled with either the letter i or the letters igh. We took a good look at the words this morning, discussed words with multiple meanings, identified rhyming words, and named antonyms of words.
We also began a new reading book: Flat Stanley! This is the first chapter book we are reading together as a class. Today, we read the first chapter. Ask your child how Flat Stanley became flat and how his family members reacted to this change!
During math, the students applied place value concepts to find equivalent representations of numbers. That's an impressive sounding mouthful, isn't it? Basically, the students used different names for the same number. For example, 32 is 3 tens and 2 ones, but it can also be shown as 2 tens and 12 ones, 1 ten and 22 ones, and 0 tens and 32 ones. We looked at tens and ones blocks and drew quick pictures to visualize this concept.
The specials class of the day was music. After this, we read the silly book Millie Waits for the Mail. We also added two more pajama symbols to our Pajama Drive board. Pajamas are due by Wednesday, December 4.
During social studies, the boys and girls were introduced to South America, our new continent of the month. They were given a tour of the South America bulletin board and exploration table. Many fruits and spices commonly used in the United States are grown in South America.. The students attempted to use their sense of smell to identify two of the spices. It was not easy! Tell your child about any food items your family eats that include nutmeg or vanilla as an ingredient..
We will visit the computer lab to continue working on our shape projects tomorrow.
