Happy Thursday! The Question of the Day was: Have you ever seen a mouse? During reading, we reread and discussed "The Country Mouse and the City Mouse" in our Junior Great Books. The boys and girls thought, wrote, and drew about the reasons the mice reacted to different events in the story. We also spent time on another writing activity, the details of which will be revealed in a few days!
Today's math lesson focused on writing equations with equal addends to represent even numbers. The specials class of the day was Music. During social studies, we read a book about totem poles and the first graders continued making their totem pole models. They will write their totem pole stories tomorrow.
The boys and girls used their prior construction experience and knowledge of the properties of solids in another building challenge. The challenge was to build a bridge across a river so that a group of animals could walk over and smell the flowers on the other side. Each team received identical sets of solids to use for this task. The students used trial and error experimentation to figure out how to use the materials. There were some hiccups in teamwork, but in the end, all the groups persevered and were successful. Congratulations, first grade bridge builders!
