The Owl About Me posters were due today. This was the first time the first graders put homework in the work bin as part of their morning business. Many students also placed trip dismissal consent forms into the note bin. Morning work was a moose drawing exercise. The Question of the Day was: Do you have any pets?
After our morning meeting, we read the book Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes. The boys and girls colored, cut, and glued to create two-sided Chrysanthemum stick puppets. One side showed a happy mouse and one side showed a sad mouse. Chrysanthemum experienced different emotions at different points in the story. Ask your child to retell the story using his/her puppet to show how Chrysanthemum felt!
During math, the boys and girls created a group pictograph showing how many students have birthdays in each month. They then each colored pictures on individual pictograph activity sheets to record that information. Ask your child to tell you something he/she noticed by looking at the data in the graph!
Following lunch, the students were introduced to the following quote from the Dalai Lama: “Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible.” We also discussed how we will use both our brains and hearts at school.
We received a mysterious box in the mail. After guessing what could be inside, we took a look. We discovered a vial with some strange looking creatures crawling inside. After seeing the contents, the boys and girls shared ideas about what they might be. Ask your child what was in the box! They should say ladybug larvae. We will celebrate Ladybug Day in two weeks!
Another exciting development that took place today was the arrival of Pinky the Axolotl. Pinky is a sweet natured amphibian with a permanent smile on his face. The first graders were thrilled to see how Pinky ate pellets out of my hand!
After completing the “Who Am I?” writing/drawing project they began earlier in the week, the boys and girls listened to the book Never Ride Your Elephant to School. During Buddy Time, the fabulous fifth grade buddies helped their little buddies complete letters to their parents about the first week of school. They also each created individual “Find Someone Who...” activity sheets for their buddies. Finally, the boys and girls attended art class with Ms. Pearlmutter.
The Bell School Back to School Bash takes place tomorrow, September 7. Come have fun on the turf with your family and friends!
We will take the first steps in a yearlong writing project next week.
