Finally! At long last we were able to enjoy Pumpkin Day! Room 104 would have to take top prize for being the most orange room in the school today. Even though we were not able to take the field trip to Goebbert's Pumpkin Farm, I think Pumpkin Day was still a memorable event for everyone!
The entire day was pumpkins, pumpkins, pumpkins. Here is an outline of our day. Be sure to ask your child for details!
Thank you to all the parents who helped make this day special by providing pumpkins, working on the Taste portion of the day and/or volunteering in the classroom. The extra hands were certainly needed this afternoon!
On Tuesday, we will count the seeds that were scooped out of the pumpkins today and see how close our estimates were to the actual amounts.
Tomorrow, we will join the other first grade classrooms in attending a theatre performance based on Eric Carle books. We will eat lunch before we leave at 10:45. Please be sure to send a lunch from home. You may wish to pack a snack for your child to eat later in the day. Thank you!

- We answered the Question of the Day: Do you like pumpkins?
- We read a poem about pumpkins and received pumpkin pencils.
- We made Pumpkinhead hats to wear during the day.
- We read the following fiction and nonfiction books: Perfect Pumpkins, Pumpkin Jack, Pumpkins by Mary Lyn Ray (my favorite pumpkin book), and Sixteen Runaway Pumpkins.
- We posed for photographs with pumpkins and pumpkinhead friends..
- We made life cycle models of the life cycle of a pumpkin. These projects are now part of an interactive display in the classroom. Ask your child to describe this project!
- We investigated pumpkins by working in teams at seven pumpkin stations: sketching our pumpkin plants, measuring height, measuring circumference, measuring weight, observing pumpkin buoyancy, writing pumpkin poems, and counting pumpkin ribs. Ask how Pinky helped out with one of these activities!
- We learned about the parts of a pumpkin.
- We counted the ribs and estimated the number of seeds that would be in big pumpkins.
- We worked in our table groups to scoop out the seeds and pulp from the big pumpkins. Some of us were a tad hesitant about this. Others attacked the task with gusto. Do you have any predictions about how your child reacted? :)
- We completed pumpkin activity books.
- We tasted delicious food made from pumpkins. Ask your child what his/her favorite item was!
- We decorated the big pumpkins with craft items, described the creations, and admired the pumpkin masterpieces.
- We measured how many pumpkins tall classmates were.
- We created pumpkin scratch art and took home the pumpkin plants we started as seeds back in October..
- We had a blast on Pumpkin Day!
