Happy Tuesday! The Question of the Day was: Will the pumpkin seeds we planted sprout this week? Morning work was a map skills paper. We reviewed the cardinal directions and use of the compass rose.
During reading, we used a Scholastic News article to learn more about tools firefighters use to keep people safe. The main focus of the article was how thermal cameras help firefighters.
After a recess break, we reflected on our trip to the firehouse last week. The students used the 5 W's (and the H) shown above to guide our creation of a description of the event. The first graders will rewrite this group effort later this week, adding their own touches to make their field trip book chapters unique.
The math lesson of the day focused on identifying and describing one equal part as a half of, a third of, or a fourth of a whole. The specials class of the day was Library. The first graders also worked on their A ____ is a house for a _______ projects. We will try to finish these this week.
During science, the boys and girls observed our brassica plants. More flowers needed pollinating, but some plants now have seed pods where flowers used to be!
Finally, we combined math, science, and social studies by using DOTS to create structures. We talked about the planning that takes place before something is built. We also looked at how using certain shapes can help make a structure more stable than others. The first graders experimented with the gumdrops and toothpicks. Some efforts did not work. That was great because finding out what does not work still means you learned something!
The first graders will participate in a planting project in the school garden tomorrow!
