Happy Field Trip Day! The Question of the Day was: Have you read the book Neither? The first graders began the day by adding to their lists of 100 Countries. Many have made excellent progress on this task!
The week's handwriting lesson focused on the D'Nealian manuscript letters q and v. Library was in the classroom. Ms. G read Jamie O'Rourke and the Big Potato, an Irish folktale, to the first graders.
Before heading off on our field trip, we read the book Neither online. Our class was the only group in the theatre so we had a private showing of the play. In fact, it was the first time, the production was performed for an audience. The students enjoyed the show and were a great audience.
When we returned to school, the first graders ate lunch in the classroom. We took a recess break outside, then picked up garbage on the playground and put rocks back where they belonged in the butterfly garden. It was exciting to see the daffodil and tulip bulbs we planted in fall beginning to grow! We made sure to wash our hands again after this.
Back in the classroom, we chatted about the play. I channeled our discussion toward the idea of inclusion. The boys and girls wrote a review of the play for their field trip books. They were given the option of writing down their thoughts in colored pencil this time. We continue to work on elaborating on our ideas and painting a picture with our words when we write. Ask your child about the play and what he/she wrote about it.
Our day ended with the introduction of a chapter book that we will read little by little during storytime breaks in our day. We read the first chapter of The Hundred Dresses today. Ask your child about the characters we have met.
Bell School's Family Wellness Night scheduled for tonight has been postponed until a later date.
Please check backpack mail for a note about the Bell School Wish List. Thank you in advance for the generous support you provide to our school!
You will also find a bright green permission slip for a field trip to the Chicago Botanic Garden in your child's home folder.
We will check on our clay investigation during science tomorrow!
