Happy Birthday, Alexander Graham Bell! The Question of the Day was: Do you have your own phone? The boys and girls began the day by writing why they thought our school was named Alexander Graham Bell School. After this, I read portions of a biography of his life to the class. The students then returned to their writing to add information they learned about AGB. Ask your child to share some facts with you! Finally, I borrowed the framed picture of Mr. Bell from the office so the students could draw pictures of him. They added party hats in celebration of his birthday.
After a fun recess break, the first graders practiced their D'Nealian handwriting skills. We then moved on to the first lesson in our new math books. The boys and girls spent time breaking apart numbers to make tens in order to find sums. This builds on the strategy introduced in the last chapter.
Following lunch and Quiet Time, the first graders enjoyed P.E.. upstairs in the gym. Upon returning to 104, they listened to the book Everybody Needs a Rock before beginning a river rock investigation. The boys and girls applied what they had learned during the soup mix investigation earlier in the year. They worked in pairs to sort bags of river rocks by size using screens. Nobody gave up. We will examine the now sorted rocks again tomorrow.
Finally, Asia was introduced as the Continent of the Month. Students shared personal connections to the continent, looked at it on the world map, and learned some basic geography and facts about it.
The first graders are sitting at new tables again. Ask your child where his/her seat in the classroom is now!
We will read a new selection in our Junior Great Books tomorrow.
