It was a great day in Room 104! The first graders all wore their new t-shirts to class and they looked fabulous in them! We took care of our morning business and observed our painted lady butterflies inside for the last time. Your child's observation sheet from this session should be added to his/her research log. It will be the final item placed in the notebook. Each student should now have a record of many of the scientific investigations and activities completed during the year under these main topics: plants, matter, earth materials, and insects.
After a break, the boys and girls in 104 met with Ms. Miller and M.r. Kosko to learn about second grade. While they were thus engaged, I met with the kindergarteners who will be stepping up to first grade next year. I remember doing the same thing with my current group of friends last year! After P.E. and Lunch, the students had an abundance of Field Day activities from which to choose. Ask your child about his/her selections!
Finally, it was time for the First Grade Celebration! After smiling for a group photo, the boys and girls opened their party packs. They discovered more smiles inside: a party hat, balloon, party blower, animal footprint tattoos, star-shaped glass charm, and a moustache! The first graders had fun with their items and then enjoyed frozen treats. The ice cream was the Taste of Antarctica portion of our party. 😀While enjoying their ice cream, we looked at the Room 104 Recipe Book. Thank you to everyone who contributed a recipe and a big thank you to Reeve's mother for creating a beautiful recipe book for us. Take a closer look, parents and try making/baking recipes submitted by your child's classmates this summer!

We also had a delightful time with a Now and Then slideshow during our party. Thank you for sending in current and baby pictures of your children. Another big parent thank you goes to Albie's mother for putting together the photo presentation. It was great fun trying to figure out to whom the baby pictures belonged!
Lastly, it was time to say goodbye to our painted lady butterflies. I brought the butterfly habitat outside to a green area on the playground. The first graders came with me virtually on my laptop. The butterflies seemed to enjoy the warm sun on their wings. After I opened the top of their habitat, they fluttered up and out one or two at a time. Some needed assistance in braving the unknown world beyond the habitat. Many butterflies flew out of sight as they began their adventures in the great outdoors. A few stayed nearby Keep your eyes open for painted lady butterflies near your home this summer!
