Today was the 178th day of first grade and the end of the school year. For morning work, the students drew pictures of something they'd like to remember about the year. Stella Dino, Pinky, and computers all made the cut. After reading the morning message, we chatted about the question therein. It seems one can be both sad and excited at the same time. Ask your child how he/she feels about leaving first grade and starting something new!
We added another lost tooth to our tooth chart today. According to our records, the first graders in 104 lost 64 teeth during the school year! We also colored Gumball #178 in our gumball machines. We each have quite the colorful gumball collection now!
Our main activity in the morning was learning more about each other by sharing another chapter in the autobiography projects. Some of the chapters selected by the students were: family vacations, family pets, personal timelines, and family maps. Ask your child what he/she chose to share today and why!
We finished taking turns sharing autobiography chapters after Quiet Time. The students then worked independently on their measuring skills during math. The in-person learners enjoyed using meter sticks to measure longer, taller, or wider things today. This included the width and length of the classroom. Hurrah for teamwork!
During literacy, we read the Scholastic News article "Save Your Skull" to prepare for a summer of outdoor fun on bicycles, scooters, and skateboards. The first graders then read other articles independently. After a recess break, we enjoyed a book for story time. To bring us full circle, I read the very first book we ever read together again as the very last book we would read together. Morris Goes to School was still funny! I pointed out that Morris asked questions when he did not understand something and reminded my little friends to always do the same!.
Finally, the students worked on an ice cream sundae project as a way to think ahead to the summer. Ask your child what he/she would like to learn and do over the break, as well as how many books he/she would like to read!
We said our good-byes😢 during Closing Circle. I hope the rising second graders enjoy their end of the year goody bags. 😊 Parents, thank you for reading the daily blog posts and for checking the weekly learning plans. Consider this the last curtain call of a remarkable year with an all-star cast of characters!
