Happy Monday! Look who I found fluttering around in the classroom this morning! I guess this painted lady butterfly wanted to spend more time observing first graders at work. He landed on me so I took him outside to join his friends that we released last week. Fly free!
The almost second graders made picture frames for their morning work. During the morning meeting, they chatted about what they did over the weekend. We added another lost tooth to the June column of our tooth charts and colored in our next-to-last gumball in our gumball machines. One of our fun facts informed us that playing frisbee burns approximately 177 calories per hour.
The main portion of the morning was spent sharing chapters from the students' autobiographies. The first graders each chose one of the following chapters to read to their classmates: Kindergarten, First Grade, or the Future. Ask your child what one or more of his/her classmates wrote and shared today!
The at-home learners were provided with a collection of books about summer to read on Epic. The in-person learners chose from insect and spider books from the class library. They also read each other's autobiographies.
We watched Ms. Miller's announcements after P.E., Lunch, Recess, and Quiet Time. During math, the boys and girls were given the option of working in either of their math chapters about measurement. They were also challenged to discover whether they were squares or rectangles. Ask your child what this means! The photo below may provide a hint.

Following math, the first graders read one of the Scholastic News articles that we did not work on together in class. They will do the same tomorrow. After DEAR Time, the in-person learners went outside for their recess break. They tidied up the Peace Garden and looked for insects in the pollinator garden. We spotted bees, cabbage white butterflies, a yellow butterfly, insect eggs, and ladybug larvae. Here is one that my eagle-eyed little friends spotted on a milkweed plant.
Other afternoon events included playing a summer-themed game of Would You Rather? and writing letters to the incoming first graders to tell them about being in Room 104. Lastly, it was Quiet Time. My story time plans for the end of the day were waylaid by Ms. Jensen who asked me for a few minutes to show a video. I was surprised to discover that the video starred my favorite first grade friends! They had done an excellent job keeping their involvement in this project a secret. I was incredibly moved by their messages in the video. It was absolutely lovely! Thank you very much for creating this amazingly thoughtful gift for me.
Parents, for the last time in first grade, please check the learning plan to be sure your child is prepared for classes tomorrow. We are obviously staying busy until the very end of the year! 😁
Thank you!
Thank you!
