Happy Tuesday! The first graders worked on activity sheets about butterflies for morning work again today. One of our Fun Facts of the Day was that Americans eat more peanut butter than anywhere else in the world. The first graders had other guesses, like pizza and French fries, as to what the item might be. Those might be true as well!
We moved directly from our morning meeting to sharing more information from the first grade autobiographies with each other. Today, the Room 104 authors chose from one of the following chapters: Family Origins, Family Chart, My Home(s). It was intriguing to see the different approaches that were taken when preparing these chapters. Ask your child to tell you something new he/she learned about one of his/her classmates!

Following a break, Declan shared his Student of the Week items with us. We learned that he would like to be a paleontologist, he has a shy little sister, and his favorite food is pasta. One of Declan's talents is swimming. He helps birds by giving them seeds to eat. Declan also showed us a bird feeder he built and a Cub Scout tiger patch he earned.
The boys and girls worked independently in their phonics books, joined Ms. Graziano for P.E., and ate lunch. After we watched Ms. Miller's announcements, I read the book Is a Blue Whale the Biggest Thing There Is? to the class. The first graders then used rulers to measure items at home or at school to the nearest inch and the nearest foot. The in-person learners worked together in small groups on these measuring tasks.

During science, we checked in on our painted lady butterflies, watched a short video of the life cycle of a monarch butterfly, and created necklaces with insect beads. Students also received nature-themed bookmarks to color. During our afternoon recess break, I took the in-person learners on a quick field trip to look for pollinators. We didn't find any eggs or caterpillars, but did see a cabbage white butterfly and several bees.
As a follow-up of sorts to the Scholastic News article "Rainbow Trees" that we read earlier, the first graders read the Science Spin article "The Rainbow River" this afternoon. The students who had not shared a chapter from their autobiographies yet today did so during Closing Circle.
Parents, please check the learning plan for Wednesday, June 16, to prepare your child for a busy day tomorrow. It will be Step Up Day, Field Day, and the day of our First Grade Grade Celebration! Be sure to have some ice cream or other frozen treat nearby for your child to eat during our celebration in the afternoon. 🍦🍧🍨
