Happy Day 171: we did have another fantastic day in first grade! The students began the day by designing their own butterflies or recreating actual ones. A couple of the in-person learners used the painted lady butterflies in the classroom as models. During our morning meeting, we learned that the country of Tonga has 171 islands. Another fun fact we heard was that a pencil can draw a line 35 miles long.
The super bonus word on today's spelling test was leisurely as in "The boy with the bathroom emergency took a leisurely stroll down the hall to the bathroom.." 🤣 There was a schedule change resulting in P.E. taking place an hour earlier than usual. We simply shifted the break and literacy sessions to after P.E instead of before.
The first graders created mini books about butterflies which included pages about camouflage, life cycle, and anatomy. The students compared and contrasted the larva and adult stages in the life of a butterfly. The books ended with a butterfly autobiography in which the first graders explained the life of a butterfly from the viewpoint of a butterfly.

In the afternoon, the first graders estimated the length of objects and used rulers to find actual lengths in inches. We also watched a fun Bill Nye The Science Guy video about insects after providing another taste test to our painted lady butterflies. Today, we provided them with sliced oranges, cuties, strawberries, grapes, plums, and bananas. Ask your child what he/she observed!
Other afternoon activities included playing Insect Bingo, working on vowel pairs in phonics, and reading the rest of True or False: Caterpillars and Butterflies. The Pod B students also received party packs for our celebration next Wednesday, as well as their fabulous first grade t-shirts. I hope everyone likes the Google Meet-inspired design! Pod A students will receive these awesome items on Monday.
Parents, please check the Learning Plan for the Week of June 14 later this weekend. Looking ahead to Monday, please be sure your child has his/her autobiography in his/her workspace. The first graders will begin sharing chapters with each other! The students will also need their Cicada Packet and the little container labeled Not Yet on Monday.
Here is Part 2 of The Little Prince. Enjoy!
