Happy 170th Day of First Grade! Today's morning work was another grid drawing exercise. This time, the students did their best to copy a picture of a butterfly. After a quick chit-chat session to start the morning meeting, we took care of our Number of the Day activities. Our Fun Fact of the Day informed us that there are over 170 species of poison dart frogs. We read the morning message and talked a bit about solar eclipses. Apparently, some children still have their special eclipse glasses from the total solar eclipse four years ago!
We returned to the story "Skunny-Wundy's Skipping Stone" during reading. The first graders thought about whether Skunny-Wundy was smart or foolish to return to the Stone Giant. They supported their opinions with information from the text. After writing and sharing their thinking, the students drew pictures of the turtle talking to Skunny-Wundy.
Following a break, the students practiced writing the D'Nealian capital letters Z, V, and W. Let's make sure these letters are not too wide when we write them! Also, the capital W has three points touching the top line, not two. After the students completed their handwriting, they worked independently on their autobiography projects.

We began our math class with the funny book How Tall? Wacky Comparisons. Then we colored tiles to measure the length of objects. Each tile was equal to one inch. The inch is a standard unit of measurement. Measuring with customary units is the focus of Go Math Chapter 8. Measuring with metric units is the focus of Go Math Chapter 9. Measuring has been incorporated into a variety of activities throughout the year. These hands-on chapters will be a great way to close out the year!
During science, we observed our painted lady butterflies. In addition to the oranges they like, we also gave them some new foods to try: apples, applesauce, cucumbers, and mango. Ask your child which fruits or vegetables the butterflies liked! After completing the taste test, we read the book How to Hide a Butterfly and Other Insects by Ruth Heller.

The first graders colored, cut, arranged, and glued to prepare insect bingo cards. We will play BINGO with them tomorrow. Most students also worked on an A-Maze-ing Insects maze/ secret message activity and/or a crossword puzzle about insects. During Closing Circle, I read the book Growing Patterns: Fibonacci Numbers in Nature to the class.
Parents, please check the learning plan for June 11 to prepare your child for school on Friday.
Pod B students will bring home their first grade t-shirts tomorrow. They will also bring home a party pack for the first grade celebration. Pod A students will receive the same items on Monday. The party pack should remain closed until June 16. The shirts should be worn for the first time on June 16. Celebration details will be sent home soon!
Also, please note that there will be a change in our Friday morning schedule for tomorrow only. P.E. will take place at 9:15 instead of 10:15 on June 11.
Finally, I always read The Little Prince to my first graders at the end of the school year. For each of the remaining days of school, I will send you a read-aloud video of the book to share with your children. Here is my first installment of The Little Prince. Enjoy!
