Happy Friday! Reading the clever book "I Can't," Said the Ant was the assigned morning work for today. Ask your child to read it aloud to you.! We took care of our customary Number of the Day business during our morning meeting. One of our fun facts for the day informed us that the original Flintstone show had 166 episodes. After we read the morning message, the students voted for the June 4 holiday that meant the most to them. We also had time to listen to the reasons some of the students made their choices. Ask your child to tell you what he/she chose and why!
We cruised through this week's spelling test, which ended with binoculars as the super bonus word. After our morning break, it was time for reading. Thank you to Ms. Jensen for reading the Scholastic News article "Which Would You Want to Cuddle?" with the class while I attended a meeting. The students then used their phonics books to review contractions and words with endings/suffixes.

After P.E., Lunch, and an extended Lunch Recess, we watched a recording of Ms. Miller's announcements for the day. During math, the first graders shared the times they had chosen to put on their clock faces. We actually had a couple pairs of students draw and write the same time. Then, it was time to play Telling Time Bingo. Everyone exhibited good attitudes when playing the games.
We checked on our painted lady butterfly chrysalides during science. All appeared as it did yesterday. Of course, we know that big chances are taking place even though we can't observe them. The main portions of the lesson involved examining a variety of insect specimens and completing two activity sheets about insect characteristics. Pictured below are a few other specimens we did not have time to look at today. Can your child spot the interloper in this collections of insects?

Our Student of the Week, Bridger, shared his Owl About Me poster and other items with us after DEAR Time and a recess break. We learned that he plays baseball and soccer, he has been skiing in Colorado, and he would like to be an engineer one day. Bridger showed that he knows how to tell funny knock-knock jokes. He also read to us from a fascinating book about dinosaurs.
During the final independent work session of the day, the students returned to the Scholastic News article read earlier in the day. One of the assigned activities was to choose a perhaps unexpected endangered animal to champion and then create a "Save the _____" poster. Ask your child to explain his/her choice to you. Finally, during closing circle, I shared a book with photos of strange insects with the class.
Parents, please check the class website later this weekend for the learning plans for the Week of June 8. Thank you very much!
