Happy Thursday! The first graders worked on previously assigned penguin projects for morning work. The fun fact of the day was that Neptune takes 165 years to go around the sun. After reading the morning message above, some students volunteered to share times when they had gone somewhere their parents had told them not to go. Ask your child about this!
During our first literacy session of the day, we read the story "Skunny-Wundy's Skipping Stone" in our Junior Great Books. The students wrote their wonderings about the story, which we will discuss during our next JGB reading class.
The two letters we focused on during this week's handwriting lesson were the D'Nealian capital letters E and F. After this, the first graders completed a spelling practice paper and worked on their autobiography projects.

In the afternoon, we watched Ms. Miller's announcements and then reviewed our money and clock skills during math class. In addition, the in-person learners noticed that Shelly the hermit crab had decided to move back into her old shell. I also distributed an envelope with new instructional materials Pod A students will receive their envelopes on Monday.
During science, we took a closer look at chrysalides. The students drew a diagram of a chrysalis from Room 104. They looked for, and labeled, the body parts that I pointed out to them. The first graders also wrote other observations about the chrysalides. Ask your child about his/her diagram and about the color of the chrysalis.

Following DEAR Time and a recess break, we read the Scholastic News article "Rainbow Plants." Students then completed reading comprehension and vocabulary worksheets based on the article. To end the day, we read the book The Butterfly Counting Book. Students were able to see examples of many colorful butterflies as well as hear how to say butterfly in several different languages.
