Happy Friday! The first graders worked on their penguin map posters for morning work. The at-home learners and in-person learners then joined each other for our morning meeting. One of our fun facts of the day informed us that female lions do most of the hunting. We also learned that there are 162 games in a regular Major League Baseball season. After reading the morning message, the first graders shared some of their plans for the long weekend ahead.
This week's spelling test included both the singular and plural forms of words. The super bonus word was legume. During phonics, the students completed exercises that involved changing the final y in words before adding the endings -er, -est, and -es.
Following the morning break, it was time for Student of the Week sharing by Jacob. We learned that Jacob would like to be a dad and an engineer one day, he likes to eat cheeseburgers, and he is currently reading the book Magyk by Angie Sage. Jacob also shared one of his talents with us: playing the piano. Thank you for the lovely music, Jacob!
Lunch recess was indoors due to the rainy weather. During math, the first graders practiced telling time to five minute intervals. The in-person learners quizzed each other using their practice clocks. We also watched a Mystery Science mini lesson about time zones. Ask your child to explain why places have different times!

Today's science lesson began by looking at a poster of the life cycle of the painted lady butterfly. We then checked on the painted lady butterfly larvae in our classroom. The caterpillars were now hanging from the top of their containers in a J shape. This is the pre-chrysalis stage. Soon the caterpillars will molt for the final time before entering the pupa stage. Ask your child to show you his/her diagram and written observations from today!
After DEAR Time and a recess break, we returned to the topic of butterfly life cycles. The students read a poem and an article about it. They then created a flip-up book titled Becoming a Butterfly. The in-person learners took turns reading the book to our painted lady butterfly larvae.
During Closing Circle, we read the book And Tango Makes Three. It is based on the true story of a penguin family at the Central Park Zoo.
Enjoy the long weekend!
