Happy Thursday! Today's morning work was to draw and write about a penguin from the viewpoint of the penguin. During our morning meeting, we learned that Crayola makes 120 crayon colors. We also shared our favorite fruits and vegetables with each other. Ask your child how he/she responded!
We returned to the topic of penguins with a song about them sung to the tune of "I'm a Little Teapot." There were numerous volunteers eager to perform solos of the song for the class. Ask your child to sing the penguin song to you! The first graders also compared adult penguins and penguin chicks, answered questions based on a reading passage about penguins, and learned how to make/play two penguin games. Later in the day, the students worked on a map project to show where in the world penguins live. When it is complete, they will each have a map of the world with flaps that reveal the different kinds of penguins.

The capital letters P and R were the focus of this week's D'Nealian handwriting lesson. After practicing these letters, the first graders turned their attention to their autobiography projects. They then learned how to say the time of day in different ways. For example, 4:30 is also half past four o'clock. If you do not have an analog clock at home, this would be a good time, pun fully-intended, to acquire one so that your child can practice telling time.
We checked on our painted lady butterfly larvae again today. The caterpillar cups did not have much food left in them and the caterpillars were all hanging out upside down on the lid. Some were moving around a bit. Others were not very active. Here is a photo to share with your child so that he/she can get a closer look at one of the caterpillars we observed. Ask your first grade lepidopterists to show you his/her observation sheet from today!

P.E. took place in the afternoon today so that I could attend a meeting. Thank you to Ms. Jensen for leading today's Closing Circle and reading Antarctic Antics: A Book of Penguin Poems to the class!
