Happy Monday! Today's morning work was a lupine coloring page to ease us into the school week. The first graders were eager to share news about their busy weekends with each other during our morning meeting. We also added two more lost teeth to the May column of our tooth charts. Our Fun Fact for Day 158 was that the Democratic Republic of Congo receives the most lightning in the world: 158 lightning strikes per square kilometer each year.
This week's spelling list is comprised of singular and plural forms of the same word. In each case the final y is changed to an i before adding the ending -es. We wrote both the regular and bonus words on flip cards during class. Here is an example:

During literacy, we read the Scholastic News article "This Bug Stinks!" The first graders learned how the stinkbugs repel predators and what adaptations for survival other insects have. They also discovered that the stinkbug goes through three stages in its life cycle: egg, nymph, and adult. Ask your child to explain what a nymph is!
Ms. Graziano was back with more special greetings and dance party fun during P.E.! In the afternoon, we began math with the book Clocks and More Clocks. We then looked at the features found on an analog clock, especially the hour and minute hands. The students used their practice clocks and the clock sticker to tell/show time to the hour and half hour. Students should be careful when drawing the hands so that it is evident which is which. Their math books have inner circles in the clock faces to guide students in doing this. This would be a great time to get your child an analog watch to wear!

Following math, it was time for science and the grand reveal of what happened in the caterpillar cups over the weekend! It was quite evident that the caterpillars had been busy eating, eating, eating. They were longer, fatter, and had molted again. Of course, all that eating means that waste will be produced. You can see the caterpillar poop in the second picture below. The students drew and wrote their observations about these developments. Students who had their research logs added the Insects section to the Table of Contents as well as glued in butterfly observation sheets to begin that section.
After DEAR Time and a recess break, we spent time reading about penguins. Today's focus was on the structural and behavioral adaptations they have in order to survive in Antarctica. The students then read and assembled a penguin-shaped mini book about Penguin Parts to learn more on the topic. Ask your child to describe at least three penguin adaptations!
We read the book What Time Is It, Mr. Crocodile? during Closing Circle. Ask your child about Mr. Crocodile's schedule and how it changed from the beginning of the book to the end!
